Wim Opbrouck volgt zijn instinct. Of beter gezegd, zanglessen !

Instinct

In·stinct het; o -en 1 aangeboren aandrift bij (dierlijke) wezens om onbewust doeltreffend te handelen 2 een theaterstuk van NTGent, geregisseerd door Johan Simons.

De titel in al zijn betekenissen spreekt toneelbezoekers aan, net zoals hij ook mij aansprak. De naam Wim Opbrouck is dan nog een extra stimulans om tickets te bestellen. En spijt heb ik niet!

Alles begint met Walter Ness (Pierre Bokma) dat in een ziekenhuisbed ligt met een ernstige schotwonde. Aan zijn zij vinden we zijn vriend en collega Keyes (Wim Opbrouck) die probeert te achterhalen wie Walter neergeknald heeft. Terwijl Keyes volledig opgaat in zijn eigen theorieën en afgaat op zijn instinct, probeert Walter het juiste verhaal te vertellen door middel van flashbacks. Dit geeft een aangename touch aan het verhaal. Zo schrikt Pierre Bokma dan plots wakker en beleeft alles opnieuw. Het is een hele opdracht om het stuk overzichtelijk en duidelijk te houden met deze tijdswisselingen. Toch zijn ze daarin met pracht en glorie geslaagd.

NTGent barst van de goede acteurs en dan denk ik aan: Wine Dierickx, Wim Opbrouck, Els Dottermans, Matijs Jansen, Pierre Bokma … En niet te vergeten, de fantastische regisseur Johan Simons. Vele van hen zijn van Nederlandse afkomst en hoewel ik mij meestal een beetje stoor aan dit Nederlandse accent, stoorde het me deze keer helemaal niet. In tegendeel, de Nederlandse bijklank paste er perfect bij en deed me wat aan een Engels accent denken. Waardoor je nog meer het gevoel kreeg dat je je in het oudere Amerika bevond. Johan Simons heeft zijn nieuwste stuk “Instinct” gebaseerd op het boek “Double Indemnity in Three of a Kind” en heeft ook hiervoor de geschikte personages gevonden: Pierre Bokma, Elsie de Brauw, Daan van Dijsseldonk, Steven Van Watermeulen, Katja Herbers, Servé Hermans, Wim Opbrouck en Kristof Van Boven. En zoals men verwacht presteerden deze weer allen.

Het stuk is een muziektheater met een Amerikaans kantje. Zo gebruikt men de typische bureautjes als werkruimte, de typische kleren van die tijd en werkt men in hoogtes: op het decor vinden we namelijk een soort van balkon terug en een trap dat je naar de eerste verdiep van het huis leidt. Verder staan er ook drie bureaus en zo ook drie bureaustoelen. Daarnaast vinden we ook een sofa, een ziekenhuisbed, een voordeur en meerdere telefonen. De indruk dat het decor achter laat is een herkenbaar gevoel. Iets wat je al eerder gezien hebt, maar niet weet waar. In een oude film misschien? Het licht versterkte dit specifieke decor. Door een soort van sportraam voor de lichtbron te plaatsen, viel het licht in stroken over het decor. Deze banden licht gaven me mysterieus gevoel dat perfect bij de verhaallijn paste.

Wanneer er uit het onverwachts een soort van gezang door de zaal weergalmde van Wim Opbrouck, slaagt het verhaal even om. Iedereen op de scène begint mee te zingen. Dit gaf een prachtig effect en voor de toeschouwer was het even een adempauze tussen het gebeuren in. Dit herhaalde zich precies op de juiste momenten: wanneer je het niet verwachtte en het toch nodig was om het verhaal wat op te frissen. Met alleen hun stemmen als instrument wisten ze een behoorlijk lied te creëren!

Kortom, ik vond “Instinct” amusant en hoewel het een vrij lange voorstelling is, is het alles behalve vervelend om naar te kijken. Het is een aanrader voor niet alleen muziekliefhebbers, maar voor zowat iedereen dat graag eens een bloedserieus verhaal met een vleugje humor ziet. Net genoeg humor om je een hele voorstelling lang te amuseren!
